How to Use the Power of AI to Reduce the Impact of Climate Change

AI for climate change

In June 2024, the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences (SATW) published a comprehensive white paper titled How to Use the Power of AI to Reduce the Impact of Climate Change on Switzerland”. This document explores how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to mitigate climate change effects and enhance the resilience of Swiss society and economy.

A collaborative effort

The white paper brought together a diverse group of over 70 experts and scientists from 30 renowned Swiss universities, authorities, and institutions. Under the leadership of SATW and in collaboration with IBM Research Europe – Zurich, the project involved participants from research, industry, and government to identify key factors for the responsible and timely adoption of AI in enhancing climate resilience. Among the contributors were Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology), MeteoSwiss, University of Zurich, Data Innovation Alliance, University of Lausanne, Swiss Data Science Center, EBP (Engineering, Consulting, Planning) and ETH Zurich.

Sustainaccount’s Role

Sustainaccount’s CEO, Dr. Christian Spindler, was among the contributing experts, providing insights into AI-driven climate risk assessment. His expertise enriched the white paper’s analysis, particularly in understanding how AI can identify and address vulnerabilities in infrastructure and real estate sectors.

Key Insights and Recommendations

The white paper emphasizes the potential of AI, combined with advanced measurement technologies, to deliver rapid and precise analyses and predictions. It presents case studies on CO₂ emissions monitoring and urban heat cluster identification, demonstrating practical applications of AI in climate resilience. The document outlines seven recommendations for action, targeting decision-makers in politics, administration, academia, and the private sector, to effectively harness AI in combating climate change.

Recognition

The significance of this work was acknowledged at the Swiss Conference on Data Science (SDS) 2024, where the SATW study received the 1st AI for Social Impact Award. This accolade highlights the study’s contribution to applying AI for societal benefit, particularly in combating climate change.

Looking Forward

Sustainaccount remains committed to leveraging the latest technologies to address climate challenges. Our involvement in the SATW white paper reflects our dedication to collaborative efforts that drive innovation and resilience in the face of climate change.
